NAPC have welcomed the central role being given to GPs in the Coalition's white paper, Equity and Excellence:Liberating the NHS.
An NAPC press release stated that "It is increasingly recognised that tackling variations in clinical practice needs to be at the heart of efforts to use resources more efficiently. Although some variations in clinical practice result from decisions taken in hospitals, others derive from decisions taken by patients' GPs and their primary care teams. The government argues that these decisions are likely to be influenced not only by the professional judgement of doctors, but also by an awareness of the costs of their decisions and opportunties to use resources differently."
Val Hempsey, an NAPC executive member, also welcoems the opportunity for practice management to do what it does best: manage and administer the system at practice and consortia level making a real difference to their patients rather than bureaucratic adn anonymous system taht currnetly operates. Val says, "Whilst recognising the absolute requirement for clinical engagement and involvement, this also empowers practices and their management systems to ensure validity, quality, cost effectiveness and appropriateness. We will have opportunities to federate with other managers and to rid the system of duplication, ineffectiveness and expensive management systems. With the right tools, the right data and the right motivation and enthusiasm we can make this work at, I am sure, a fraction of the previous cost and giving patients the right care at the right place in timely manner"
